Ice Cream Playdough

May 18, 2015 by Jenny Melrose

I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am to share with you this fun Summer kids activity for Ice Cream Playdough.  There are two reasons though.  The first is that it’s adorable.  Clearly!  The second is that it is just one of the many fun and adorable crafts from Smart School House’s Crafts for Kids book!  If you’ve hung around here long enough, you know how much I adore Kelly and Smart School House so I am absolutely thrilled that I get to share her brand new book!

Ice Cream Playdough

You’ll only need 3 ingredients to create this Ice Cream Playdough: pre-made frosting {we used Pillsbury Funfetti Frosting in Bold Purple} 2 3/4 cups of confectioners sugar and olive oil.  We also added in Green Maraschino Cherries into our play.  My girls definitely ate a couple of them in the midst of playing.  In order to create the playdough combine the frosting and the confectioner sugar with a standing mixer using the dough paddle.  Since we are moving in less than two weeks my standing mixer was already packed so we sued our hand mixer and it worked perfectly.  All frostings are made differently so if you use too much sugar where it’s breaking apart, just add in a bit of olive oil.  Refrigerate the playdough for thirty minutes prior to playing.

Our frosting came with the fun sprinkles and those gorgeous green Maraschino cherries jumped out at me just after picking up the frosting.  My girls couldn’t believe that they were actually cherries and they had a blast sprinkling their playdough with the sprinkles and topping it with a cherry.  Their dolls also seemed to enjoy it since it was the perfect afternoon for a doll ice cream party.  I just wish I had Kelly’s book last year when I did Avery’s first birthday party.  It would have been so cute in my Tulle Pom Pom topped Gift Jars!

I can’t even begin to tell you how many other great crafts are inside of Smart School House Crafts for Kids.  The cupcake on the front cover is a chalk cupcake!  Seriously adorable!  You can grab your copy on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.  It’s the perfect book to beat the Summer boredom blues.
