August 17, 2012 by Jenny Melrose
I am so excited to introduce all of you to one of my feature sponsors.  Jacqueline is the woman behind The Detox Diva.  As many of you may know, I had difficulty getting pregnant with Riley and we haven’t been able to get pregnant again.  When we conceived Riley I was taking fertility drugs and hormones that made me feel unlike myself.  I have recently taken a huge interest in Jacqueline’s site because of her natural and calming approach to life.  She is here to explain exactly what she does and then offer a HUGE giveaway that includes 3 free sessions of nutritional counselling AND a $50 gift certificate to The Nature of Beauty.
Why Should You Visit a Holistic Nutritionist?

So what is holistic nutrition?

Holistic Nutrition centers around preventing and reversing nutritional imbalances in the body. When the body is out of balance, disease can be created and symptoms are experienced. Symptoms are the body’s way of communicating that problems are manifesting. If balance is not restored, symptoms and disease can worsen. It is the role of a holistic nutritionist to determine where the imbalances lie, be they nutritional or other lifestyle issues, and provide a thorough and individualized plan to restore this balance. This process helps the body find its own healing mechanisms and in many cases, reverses illness.  Other issues such as behavioral conditions such as ADD, developmental conditions such as autism, even issues such as infertility or chronic conditions dealing with autoimmune syndrome can be improved upon greatly with the proper nutrition and lifestyle guidance.

What tools does a holistic nutritionist use to create balance in the body?

The cells in the body are built from food that is consumed. If that food is healthy, nutrient dense, and free from harmful chemicals, cells will reflect this and thus allow for optimal health and vitality. On the other hand, eating a diet that is unhealthy, nutrient poor and chemical-laden will create imbalance and can lead to disease. Therefore, holistic nutritionists focus on cellular nutrition. This means that the focal point is on how to get the best quality and highest number of micronutrients into the body within the daily allowance of food consumption. A holistic nutritionist will also help identify any food sensitivities or underlying and undiagnosed allergies that may be causing symptoms or chronic conditions.  The foundation for a cellular nutrition protocol is whole foods; however, nutritionists will also employ supplements, herbs, lifestyle counseling, emotional support, etc to create optimal cellular health.

What can you expect when visiting a holistic nutritionist?

Working with a holistic nutritionist will involve an extensive information gathering visit which will allow for the assessment of symptoms, health concerns, health and lifestyle history, dietary restrictions, current state of health, and current dietary practices. From this information, the nutritionist will be able to better assess which imbalances exist within the body and the root cause of those imbalances. With this knowledge, a thorough and customized protocol will be created. Everyone has a unique biochemistry. Therefore, two people can have the same disease or similar symptoms and yet have completely different root causes for the imbalance. This is why an individualized approach is most effective.

Who should see a holistic nutritionist?

Many people can benefit from seeing a holistic nutritionist. Whether the goal is to gain additional nutrition advice, help improve the nutrition of your family, or the reversal of unwanted symptoms and illness, a nutritionist can play a vital role in improving your state of health. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to determinif it may be beneficial to see a holistic nutritionist:

  • Do you want to learn how you can optimize your diet?
  • Do you want to uncover food sensitivities and learn how to manage your diet around them?
  • Do you want to improve mood and energy levels?
  • Are you experiencing hormone imbalance, have a thyroid condition, or are dealing with adrenal insufficiency?
  • Do you have extra weight you would like to lose?
  • Are you interested in preventing or reversing unwanted symptoms and disease?
  • Are you dealing with a chronic condition such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus, or other autoimmune disease, diabetes, hypertension etc?
  • Are you trying to conceive, pregnant or nursing, or trying to regain your prepregnancy glory?
  • Are you interested in working with a coach who can help motivate and guide you towards improving your overall health?
  • Would you like to execute certain types of diets in a healthy way (e.g. vegan, vegetarian, raw, omnivore, detox, cleanse, etc.)?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, the support from a holistic nutritionist will help you achieve your individualized health goals.

What kind of diseases can a holistic nutritionist cure?

A holistic nutritionist’s goal is not to cure and can make no claim to being able to cure a disease.  The definition of a cure is “a substance or treatment that cures a disease or condition.” Holistic nutritionists work to help prevent and reverse symptoms and illnesses in the body. If the body has the proper tools (i.e, nutrition, lifestyle changes) to heal itself, the body will heal itself. Holistic nutritionists do not replace the advice of a medical doctor or naturopathic doctor however many holistic nutritionists work alongside these professionals to be able to ensure their clients receive the best integrative care.

Now that you are aware of the value of holistic nutrition, Jacqueline wants to give you the chance to win 3 FREE sessions of nutritional counselling!  Plus, she’s throwing in a $50 gift card to The Nature of Beauty!

Marlee, we look at all fruits and vegetables as a whole being good for you when rotated and eaten plentifully. If I had to tell you to add ONE to your diet it would be greens like kale and chard, the whole family of them. Eating seasonally and locally also helps because the different vegetables in season do more to help protect your health than trying to eat “superfood” blueberries in the middle of winter when they come from Chile.
Shalasha, at The Detox Diva we give you a lot of information on how to combat stress and find a more balanced life. And Lori, thanks so much for seeing the value in the giveaway!
