Carpet Cleaning Tips

October 6, 2016 by Jenny Melrose

Does your carpet need a good cleaning?  Even in homes where everyone in the household is trained to take their shoes off before entering the house, the carpets can get dirty over time.  This is especially true in homes where there are children and pets like ours.  Our carpet cleaning tips are tried and true, even against the toughest messes.

Thank you to Stanley Steemer for partnering to sponsor this post.

Does your carpet need a good cleaning? These tried and true carpet cleaning tips will have you singing their praises. #ad

As a family of five now {yes I’m counting the dog} it’s become tougher to keep up with the messes.  Between the girls and their snack crumbs somehow always sneaking away from the table to keeping up with the accidents of a new puppy, our carpets have seen some recent messes.  We wouldn’t want our family any other way, but it definitely requires some carpet cleaning maintenance.

Many of you might remember that my husband is a bit crazy about the vacuuming in the house. He vacuums the downstairs at least three to four times a week and does the upstairs and stairs at least once to twice a week.  He likes his carpets clean, but with Charlie in the mix, it’s a bit more difficult to keep them clean.

In order to maintain the messes, we called in the professionals.  Stanley Steemer stepped in and saved the day.  My favorite part was that they had 6 rooms and one stairwell done in just about an hour.  Plus, they adjusted my original estimate of the number of rooms I wanted cleaned from my original scheduling that I made online.

Carpet Cleaning Tips with professionals

Regular carpet cleaning is highly recommended to keep keep the overall health of the home and this is especially true if anyone in the home has allergies.  Stanley Steemer’s carpet cleaning service is Certified asthma & allergy friendlyTM and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends that carpets get cleaned three to four time per year by a professional service.    The great thing is that Stanley Steemer does more than just clean your carpets.  They also offer deodorizing services, which I was thrilled about since I’m not a fan of my house smelling like dog.

Although, I certainly wouldn’t trade him.  Would you?  Just look at that face!

Not only were the carpets cleaned, deodorized and protected, but they were also raked through to improve the tread marks of where we routinely walk in our house.  You could literally see our path to our bed in our bedroom, but once the rake went through it improved tremendously.  Stanley Steemer continued to impress me throughout the visit.  Did you know that they clean air ducts, upholstery, hardwood floors and even tile floors?  I wish I had known this for our bathroom floor in our old house in NY.  The grout drove me crazy!

Stanley Steemer also has their own product line for specific issues as well.  I swear this spot remover is liquid gold for cleaning out mud issues from Charlie.  Plus, they have an entire series of Home Remedy Videos so that any issue you run into you’ll know how to clean it.

The spot remover even managed to get out the mud stains on our bathroom area rug that Charlie was clearly a culprit of.   Carpet cleaning just got so much easier once I realized how many products and services that were offered.

Carpets do take a lot to maintain and keep clean. Especially with kids and pets! I don’t have carpet in my living room but do so in the bedrooms. I try to get those cleaned at least 2 times a years. Gotta keep those allergens down and keep all those little dust mites in check!

Great story and tips on getting your carpets cleaned! Thanks so much for sharing. It’s always best to get a professional to do the job for maximum effectiveness.

Very informative tips. Also, avoid sprinkling fine powders such as baking soda or carpet fresheners. The residue will never completely vacuum out of the carpet. It will build up over time and when you do have your carpet professionally cleaned the fine dust particles wick back to the surface.

One tip that I regularly use on carpet issues, especially tinkle on the carpet, is baking soda. A reader recommended baking soda and an essential oil like lemon mixed in. BTW, nice article here. It gives a lot of ideas.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s also good to check the chemicals on the cleaners. I find that some work better than others on certain carpets.

Really good carpet cleaning tips and helpful especially with children and pets. Pet hair is also a common phenomenon in my house as I have two dogs and every few months a professional carpet cleaning becomes necessary.

I like that you mention that carpet cleaning is especially important for those who have allergies. My son suffers from allergies so once we move into our new home in a couple of months, that’s one of the first things that we want to be done. It’s important to take the time to do some research before deciding on a company. You need to make sure that they’ll do the best at a reasonable price.

I’m the same as your husband. Just to give an idea, bacteria can live on your carpet up to 4 weeks. The five second rule- did you know food can pick up from 150-8,000 bacteria in the time frame?! AND 10 types of bacteria cause flu-like symptoms! Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum and call the pros.

Not only does carpet cleaning remove odors and stains but also helps with allergies, which most people tend to forget! We just started a carpet cleaning business in Escondido, CA and this is a positive externality that I always let my customers know. It’s really refreshing when you finally stop sneezing because your house is allergen free!

Very good content here and I appreciate the time it took for you to write this!

    Best of luck!

As a FUR-family of four, I would willingly like to add to this great article with what I have found to be some killer stuff when it comes to pet stains… even dried, long set in and thought to be forever stained.

Yup, I recently discovered the brand Zep, and I am in no way affiliated with the company.

The product to which I am referring is the high traffic carpet spot and stain remover. It works on… anything.

Pet stain, oil, grease, ink, you name it and this miracle product works its wonders somehow.

The best part is the bottle is only $3 and you can get it at Walmart home depot etc.

    You’re welcome 🙂

Very informative tips. When it comes to carpet cleaning I always suggest to find the best local cleaners near you. Hiring a professional carpet cleaning company will give you the peace of mind that they are using the right techniques and chemicals to truly irradicate all of the microbes that would cause any health problems in your home.

Kids and pets can be hard on carpets, but it sure sounds like you’re in good hands! I love the feel of freshly cleaned carpet, you know in the five seconds before someone spills again!
