Google+ Tutorial

July 31, 2012 by Jenny Melrose

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room.  We all know it’s upon us, but I bet I’d see a sea of hands who have not ventured into the dreaded (scary music cue) Google+.  Well, I’m here to force it on all of you!  Winks and hugs of course because change can be scary!  Let’s push ourselves forward!

You need to start out by going to Google+.  If you are already logged into your gmail account your information will show up.  If you’re not signed in yet, you’ll need to sign in with your gmail account and password.  From there, you’ll need to enter your name, birth date and gender.  You should also add a profile picture.  The profile picture should be one that you would want for your personal page because I’m going to walk you through how to add a business/blog page.  Once you add your personal info you’ll be able to add people to your circles or people you want to follow.  You’ll then be prompted to add interesting people, but you can skip this if you want so that you can get into the meat and potatoes of setting up your business profile. Here’s a look at my personal page:

If you click on each of the icons to the left of the page (Home, Profile, Events, Photos, Circles, Games and More) it will take you in and out of the Google+ applications.  When you’re on your Profile icon you can add Posts, About, Photos, and Video.  The icons for this is located below your cover photo.  Now let’s talk about adding a business page.  Click on the last icon going down on the left hand side of the screen, which is More.  This will get you here…

Now you’ll need to click “Create New Page”.  If you have an etsy shop as compared to only a blog you could have multiple pages.  For my blog I defined it as other so that I could enter the website url and a description of it.  Here’s a look at my blog’s Google+ page.

Now here’s my absolute favorite thing.  Take a look at my screen shot inside blogger.

See that new tab?!  The red arrow is pointing to a Google+ tab that allows me to post as my Google+ business page!  Woohoo!  This is what I’ve been waiting for.  Less leg work!  Now that you’ve had a crash course of Google+ get your profile ready for a Google+ Blog Hop on Saturday, August 4th.

Please feel free to follow me on Google+.  If you have any questions send them my way!  Let’s figure this out together!

  • Ashley Woods

I just created pages for my blogs! I haven't used Google+ much because I don't know how to use it effectively. This is a start. Thanks for sharing.

  • Jill @ Create.Craft.Love.

Thanks for the great walk through, Jenny! I got it started so I can be ready for the blog hop!

  • KCoake

Thanks for this info. It is something I have needed to get to and haven't as far as linking blogger and that new google+ tab. I am working on it. How did you link your page vs your personal profile? When I say I want to link them, it doesn't appear to give me any choice to link my blog page vs my personal profile. TIA!

  • Sarah

Oh my gosh…thanks a million for this post! Do viewers of the page see your personal information? I'd like for them to stay separate 🙂

  • Shasta Farrar

Fantastic post! Thank you SO much…and also for the shout out about the hop on Sat. I really think g+ is going to help bloggers and shop owners. They just need to learn how to use it effectively!

Thanks for explaining how to create a page for my blog. I've done nothing to my G+ page … I just go there, stare at it for about 5 minutes, then leave! Super helpful 🙂

I've been on Google+ for a while now and I still don't “get” it. I have ended up with a TON of strangers following me but I am only following a handful of others. I also have followers of my Business Page but I want the personal followers to see my business feeds as well. I see that you are also posting to your business page and then sharing on your personal page. Do you know of a better way to get people over the business page instead of the personal page?

  • Desperate Craftwives

Thanks for the lesson in google plus! Also, love the new look of the blog!

    • Jenny

Thanks so much Blythe. If you have any questions about G+ please feel free to ask.

  • Toqua's Crafts

I tried Google + and didn’t like it, so I quit.
Maybe I should venture back into it…
    Thank you for sharing this.

I just started my blog and jumped right in to google+. I’ve been loving it! Dare I say….I like it *more* than Facebook? Wonderful tutorial. Thank you!!

  • katie goldsworthy

Hey Jenny! I love that you called it the elephant in the room! It seems to be a big topic this week! This is actually one train that I was on early (not really sure how that happened!)

So Google is my biggest referrer too. I’m assuming that is different that getting referrals from Google + . How do you get so many hits from people coming over from Google +? Well, I guess you could have a bazillion followers on there. I think I have like 35 people following me on there or something. lol I was under the assumption that the only people who could see my posts on there were people who had choose to follow me on Google +? Is this true? Also, after I publish a post (I’m still on Blogger), there is a little box that pops up and asks me if I want to share it on Google+. Is this the same thing as posting it to Google+?
Thanks for any info! I use it, but really have no idea how it works! haha

  • Nicole

Okay, I think I have the personal page & the website page set up. I thought I was good to go … but, now I’m wondering if there is a way to only use the WonkyWonderful G+ page. I don’t really have much use for the personal page. On FB I can easily switch back & forth between the personal & blog page – I’m not seeing that option on G+ … & I’m still a bit confused on how to even follow or circle someone. Any help will be greatly appreciated – Thanks 🙂

  • Desire Empire

    Hi Jenny
I’m keen to get on board google + but not so keen to go public with my real name. For example, when I comment I want to be Desire Empire not Caolyn Da…..h. How does that work as google says when I switch over everyone will see me as my real name not my log name. I am only joining to drive traffic to my blog. Just wondering how you feel about security.

  • Desire Empire

Thanks so much for getting back to me with your lengthy explanation. It really helped clarify several things. I have already set it up and now intend not doing the blogger switch. That advice is gold, thanks again Carolyn xx
Ps will follow on the way out so I can see more of your fab posts. I so appreciate you taking the time to answer me
