Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

As many of you know we {Riley and I} are huge cupcake fans.  During the holidays, I struggle to find a traditional dessert to make.  I’ve found that I only like one type of pie made with one specific recipe.  I love my momma’s apple pie.  It is like eating a taste of heaven.  The apple filling is sweet and tender and not dried out at all.  The topping is a crystallized bite of cinnamon sugar perfection.  For Thanksgiving I packed my mom’s apple pie up in my trusty pie carrier and brought it down to my in-laws and I’m pretty sure I ate apple pie for breakfast every morning.  What can I say, I’m pregnant.

Serves: 12-14
A deliciously sweet homemade apple pie with a crystallized cinnamon sugar topping.
  • Filling:
  • 5-6 large baking apples (peel, core & chop)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Topping:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup butter melted
  • Sprinkle with sugar then cinnamon after the topping is placed on top of the filling.
  1. Use a pre-made crust. I typically use a Pillsbury crust.
  2. Combine all ingredients for the filling and place on top of the pre-made crust.
  3. Combine the sugar, flour and melted butter for the topping. Mix with hands because it will become crumbly. Sprinkle the topping on top of the filling. Finally, sprinkle a fresh layer of sugar then cinnamon on top of the topping.
  4. Bake at 450 F for 15 minutes and then 350 F for 30 minutes.
