Are you thinking of heading to the beach, but not sure where to go because of the kids? This is always my biggest predicament, but it was even larger since instead of just my two girls we had my two nephews and niece to make a total of 5 kids all under the age of seven. Myrtle Beach was the perfect vacation spot for us though and I’ll bet it’ll be for you too.
Thanks to the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce for partnering with us to find all the perfect spots to explore.
If you’re looking for a beach experience then I highly recommend Myrtle Beach. We went during the Spring and it was just as beautiful as the Summer. The sands are clean and there’s ton of room for the kids to run and play. Plus, the sand is perfect for sand castles. My girls especially love chasing the waves. At least that’s what they call it. It’s more like the waves are chasing them and they just run around screaming. They’d do it for hours and the waves at Myrtle Beach are perfect for it because any time we’ve gone they’re never massive where I’m nervous that they’ll get pulled under if they lose their balance.
Even my one year old niece was able to stand and enjoy the waves with a little help from Grandma. The beach not only has the fun of the sand and water, but the boardwalk is right there with tons of family friendly restaurants. Plus, you can’t miss out on a chance to ride the Skywheel. The Skywheel is 187 ft. ferris wheel that gives you gorgeous views of the ocean and beach life on Myrtle Beach all in an air-conditioned car. Afterwards you can grab a bite to eat at Land Shark Bar & Grill, which is right next door. The fun, family atmosphere is the perfect place to enjoy a family meal.
There are numerous places to stay in Myrtle Beach. We stayed at the Sheraton Broadway Plantation Resort Villas. There were activities for the kids everyday as well as mini-golf, a playground, shuffle board, ping pong and pool all on site. Plus, there was a lazy river, a kiddie pool, hot tub and a splash cove, which was an interactive pirate ship with slides and climbing areas. You probably also saw on SnapChat that there was a large water slide for the kids over 42″ tall or big enough to bargain with the lifeguards that she “promised she could swim”. Yes, Avery was bargaining and loving every second of the slide. The Sheraton also offered Mermaid Camp, which Riley jumped all over!
Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach offers live mermaid shows at their facility. We were lucky enough to have the mermaids come to the Sheraton. We honestly would have stayed here just to have this opportunity. Riley was all smiles the second the mermaids arrived with the campers’ mermaid tails. The campers started off by getting a special crystal necklace that all mermaids must have and then they got into their mermaid tails where they learned how to kick like a mermaid.
The mermaids that came to teach the camp were helpful and patient with all of the girls. They made this a wonderful experience while keeping a close eye on all of the campers. Riley still pretends today that she’s a mermaid when she’s swimming. I’m pretty sure Santa needs to add this mermaid tail to his pack. We didn’t have the opportunity to get to the aquarium, but we explored the numerous restaurants, stores and rides at Broadway at the Beach. There was literally something there for every single age.
One of the hidden gems of Myrtle Beach in our opinion was The Carolina Opry. I had no idea that it was there and I was blown away by the quality of the performance. We went to see Thunder & Light with All That and the kids were captivated the entire time. Even my one year old niece enjoyed the show.
You might recognize All That from America’s Got Talent. They are a clogging group that makes you want to learn clogging. Both of my girls take tap and they watched in amazement as these men clogged their way through popular songs and routines that were full of jumps, flips and fast flying feet.
Thunder & Light also includes The Wagsters, which were husband and wife illusionists. My three old has been trying magic tricks ever since attending. Her favorite is “guess which hand” and she has the item sitting on the table in front of her. She has quite a way to go to perfect her tricks, but I love that she was left in such wonderment from the show that she brought it home with her.
If you’re looking to vacation at the beach then I would highly recommend Myrtle Beach as the destination of choice. We will definitely be heading back to explore more!
