Sports Graduation Cake

June 3, 2012 by Jenny Melrose
As many of you know Joe graduated from college this past weekend with his degree in physical education.  I wanted a fun cake for him so I combined the two.
The bottom layer was two 9 inch cakes iced with butter cream icing and then covered in fondant.  I made the lines of the basketball with fondant as well.
The top layer of the cake was one of the pans from Wilton’s 3D ball pans and another 9 inch cake which I cut to the diameter of the ball cake.  I need the ball with a bit more height, which was the reason I added the other 9 inch cake.  I then made the lines on the baseball with Twizzlers.  The cap is cupcake liners topped with a rectangular sugar cookie and a circle sugar cookie that held the tassel on.  The cookies were iced with royal icing.  I also cut the ends of the Twizzlers to make is look more like a tassel.  The finishing touch was a whistle, which covered up the divide between the two balls.  The whistle also symbolized the phys. ed. teacher that Joe now is.
We had a wonderful day celebrating with family and friends.  I have a couple more treats that I’ll be sure to add soon.  All of the treats stick with the theme.  My favorite by far is the baseball mitt fruit salad bowl.  I’ll be sure to get that up in the next couple of week.
