Hello there! I’m Tara from Anything & Everything, so happy to be here today with my first contributor post for NY Melrose Family! With Thanksgiving coming up very soon, today I am sharing some very cute and festive Thanksgiving place card holders. Not only are these fun little guys turkeys, but they make great place card holders, AND serve as colored pencil holders to keep the little ones busy! Also, did I mention they are turkeys 😉 My little guy is really into coloring right now, so I knew the colored pencils would be the perfect added touch for him.
Thanksgiving Place Card Holders
what you will need:
- pine cones
- colored pencils (optional)
- small wood sticks
- chenille pipe cleaners
- hot glue gun
- mod podge
- felt fabric
- small wiggle eyes
First, I started by gluing the feathers to the back of the pine cones with a hot glue gun.
I am so glad that I picked these up at the craft store, as I really wasn’t sure at first whether to incorporate them. However, while putting these place holders together they were the perfect added touch. They come in a bundle and have really long stems. I just cut the stems really short, to easily just insert them into the pine cones.
Now time to make the cute little turkey faces, and lets face it, that’s really why you are all here. Who can resist cute little turkey faces 🙂 Using red, orange, and brown felt fabric, I was able to achieve a turkey face with just a few cuts. I wanted the face to be sturdy so I used a small wood stick for the base of the head. I then traced around the wood stick onto the felt, cut out and used mod podge (my duct tape of DIY-ness) to glue the felt on to the stick. Once that was dry, I glued it on to the front of the pine cone with a hot glue gun. Then I started assembling the face. I stuck on the the eyes, cut a triangle out of the orange felt for the nose, then cut out the the snood with the red felt, and glued all them on. Here is how that all came together!
To make the legs, I used some chenille pipe cleaners. Just cut them pretty short, and fit them into each side.
If you are going to be incorporating the colored pencils you can now just stick them in at the top by the feathers. The only colored pencils I could find were long ones, so I just cut them in half and they fit in great!
I have to say that I love the mix of whimsical versus the confused look of these silly little mammals. Sigh… It’s a shame you are so delicious. The last step was to print out some place cards, and my Thanksgiving Place Card Holders were complete!
