Toasted Italian Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Italian bread 12 to 15 inches
  • 6 to 8 slices each of mortadella soppressata, prosciutto, and salami
  • 6 to 8 slices each of mozzarella and provolone cheese
  • 5 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons sliced banana peppers
  • ½ small red onion thinly sliced
  • ½ small head of iceberg lettuce thinly sliced
  • 1 large tomato thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the broiler to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Slice the Italian loaf in half and place on the baking sheet.
  • Layer the deli meats on the bottom half and the cheeses on the top half.
  • Broil for 3 to 5 minutes until the cheeses melt and the bread is crispy.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, vinegar, relish, and seasoning, adding salt and pepper to taste.
  • Add in banana peppers, red onion, and iceberg lettuce and toss to combine.
  • Remove the bread from the oven. Layer the salad dressing on the meat and add tomato slices and grated Parmesan.
  • Slice into four equal portions and serve.
