How to Meal Plan for Picky Eaters

Do you struggle daily at meals with your picky eaters? These simple how to tips to meal plan for picky eaters will bring back your sanity as well as expand your weekly menu.

Put something on their plate that you know they like.  When you cook a meal try to have something on their plate that will ease their immediate need to say, "I don't like that."  It can be as simple as a side or even the protein.  My girls love meatloaf so I always try to introduce a new side when I make my meatloaf.  In order to make this easier, meal plan the week out with so that you can see that you're doing this.

Have a one bite rule.  My oldest likes to judge her food by the cover.  She's a food critic based upon presentation and we combat it by having a one bite rule.  She knows without an argument that I want her to try everything on her plate with one bite.

With multiple siblings have them give a silent signal.  I have two girls and the youngest who is two and a half agrees with whatever my six year old says.  In order to combat this we have our oldest always say, "That's good" no matter if she likes it or not.  She’ll then give us a thumbs down if she’s saying it for her sister’s benefit.  My youngest hasn’t caught on yet.

Know when they are old enough to understand consequences.  Both of my girls understand consequences.  I've been implementing them from the very beginning though.  My girls understand that if they don't abide by my one bite rule then they're not going to get anything else.

Be flexible.  If you've never laid out expectations for eating then you need to understand that this is going to take time.  It's just like sleep training your baby.  You are changing their behavior with a new set of expectations.  This is not to say that you should give up.  It's going to take time and you'll need to ease them into it.
