Natural Cough And Cold Remedies: The Backstory
The past month felt like a never-ending cycle of colds. First one of my girls got sick, and right when she started feeling better, the other went down.
Making things even more complicated, the illness traveled throughout the house, putting everyone down for the count, including me. Dealing with sick kids and soothing sick toddlers (and a sick husband too!) is not fun at all.
It’s terrible to see your sweet children feeling yucky! All you want to do is comfort them and make them feel better—fast! As a tired mom who runs a business at home, I do my best to ease my sick little ones’ symptoms.
Thankfully, though, I found a way to help boost our immune systems, keep the kids healthy, naturally soothe a cough, and help the family quickly get over whatever nasty illness is going around. I love having natural remedies on hand to effectively relieve our cough symptoms without needing over-the-counter pharmaceuticals.
Natural cough syrups are my favorite options because they do not contain chemicals, you can make them yourself, and they don’t cost a fortune.
Parents will understand when I say, with two little girls I need all the help I can get! If you’re in need of a helping hand as well, keep on reading to find out more about the best cough medicine and our beloved, tasty pineapple tea recipe to help yous top coughing.
Natural Cough Suppressant For Kids And Adults
For me, it’s imperative to turn to natural ingredients that are affordable and can also suppress a cough when needed.
Some of the most common ingredients that I like using are honey, chamomile, turmeric, ginger, masala chai tea, and more. They soothe irritation and have strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Pineapple Juice
I often get asked "Does pineapple juice help a cough", because it's one of those natural remedies that gets passed down from generation to generation.
Pineapple juice contains an enzyme called bromelain, which has anti-inflammatory properties and can help break up mucus.
It is also very soothing to the throat. So, if your child is suffering from a scratchy throat and a dry or wet cough, pineapple juice can help.

Honey
Honey has been shown to help soothe and relieve soreness in the throat. One study found that honey was as effective at treating a cough at nighttime as cough medicine!
Honey is not only one of the top medically reviewed home remedies, but it also tastes good.
The easiest recipe I’ve tried so far includes combining warm water, lemon, and honey. It will soothe your throat and help you feel better almost instantly.
Let’s not forget that honey is an efficient cough suppressant too. If you or your little one has been struggling with constant, chronic coughing that’s almost too much to handle, try honey. This is an excellent remedy to opt for before going to bed, because it will help calm you or your little one and provide a better night’s sleep.
In general, suppressing coughing is not a great idea because coughing is a mechanism that your body uses to get rid of mucus; however, there are times when you simply want this nasty symptom to stop.
Marshmallow Root
If you want to know how to get rid of a cough and to take a natural approach, marshmallow root is another way to go.
This root comes in several forms, including herb and tea. You can try either one, and you’ll likely see improvement.
I always have marshmallow root tea on hand at home. I place the tea bag in hot water and enjoy my tea every time I feel my throat getting irritated and scratchy.
The marshmallow root creates a thick coating on the throat to reduce irritation from coughing. That happens thanks to the root’s high mucilage content.
Ginger For Colds & Tummy Bugs
Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe sore throats and coughs. Ginger has also been shown to help soothe nauseous tummies too. We often use ginger as well to help with chest congestion and break up mucus.
When made into a tea, the warm ginger can really pack a one-two punch to help knock out those coughs.
Chest And Vapor Rubs
Chest and vapor rubs are great, but have you ever read the ingredients in them? I stopped using them for colds when I found out that I can make them myself using simple ingredients.
All you need is essential oils, beeswax, and coconut or olive oil. Some of the best essential oils for this purpose are rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint, and cinnamon, among others.
The rub will act as a decongestant for your nasal passages, and it’s such a handy thing to have around to tackle common colds.
If you’re looking to ease coughing in children, make sure that you’re only using oils that are safe for their age.

Great post! Just a word of warning, though, sometimes it’s best NOT to suppress a cough. Coughing helps protect your lungs from the mucus in your head. For children and pregnant women, it especially might not be a good idea to suppress a cough if you are sick.
A few other things to help your immune system kick a cold is to avoid sugar (it really reduces your immune system’s strength) and avoid dairy (it can increase mucus production). Eating cruciferous vegetables helps make your immune system stronger.
