What is a 7 layer burrito and why should you make it?
A 7 layer burrito consists of seven ingredients that you layer on top of a flour tortilla. They are easy to make for yourself, your family, or for a party.
You can make a wide variety of burritos from the typical beef or chicken to more specialized, such as al pastor, verde, seafood, or veggie. This recipe uses chicken for the meat, but you can replace it with whatever you’d like.
Ingredients
- 1 lb boneless chicken breasts
- 1 can chicken broth
- ½ tsp ancho Chile pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 pkg burrito size flour tortillas
- 1 small bag of shredded Mexican blend cheese
- 1 tomato, diced
- Guacamole (homemade or store-bought)
- Sour cream or crema
- 1 red onion, diced
- Salsa
How to Make a 7 Layer Burrito
- Step 1 — Cook the Chicken
You can cook the chicken several ways — stovetop, crockpot, multi-cooker, Instant Pot, or grill. Use the Instant Pot cooking method to save time.
The other cooking methods can produce excellent cooking results, but you’ll need to time your cooking session so that the meat will be ready to use when you are ready to build your burrito(s). For this recipe, we used a multi-cooker.
Remove the chicken from the package and give each piece a thorough wash, removing any fatty tissue. Place them in the multi cooker basin.
Add the chicken broth and spices.
Set the multi-cooker to cook for 4 hours on the High setting.
- Step 2 — Heat your grill pan
This step is for the tortillas, which will be easier to fold once they are warm. Heat the pan while you shred the chicken. By the time you’re finished with the shredding, the pan will be hot enough to soften the tortillas.
- Step 3 — Place some shredded chicken onto the tortilla.
- Step 4 — Add the cheese.
- Step 5 — Add the red onions.
- Step 6 — Add the salsa.
- Step 7 — Add the tomatoes.
- Step 8 — Finish with guacamole and sour cream.
- Step 9 – Roll up the burrito.
Fold the sides and press them into the guacamole and sour cream so that they'll stay.
Take the open end closest to you and position it on top of the opposite end. Then use both hands and roll it away from you. the result should look like this.
Tips for Making a 7 Layer Burrito
- If you’re serving a crowd, you can cook the meat the night before. Make sure to leave it sitting in its juices so that it won’t dry out.
- Cut up your veggies ahead of time so that all you have to do is layer the ingredients when it comes time to make your burritos.
- Use a non-stick grill or pan when heating up your tortillas.
- Use a separate pan for grilling any veggies so that their juices won’t soak into the tortilla during the warming process.
